Ribbons, Bracelets, and Disease

awareness_ribbons_hi_res_1 …The politics of illness are complex. Certain diseases have large communities of support, celebrity spokespeople, and ample funding. The financial aspect of disease can be overtly visible, such as in two side-by-side clinics in a medical building where I used to work. First, it’s important to understand that “cancer survival rate” doesn’t mean the rate of people who are cured of a cancer. The cancer survival rate is the percentage of people who survive a certain type of cancer for a specific amount of time, usually five years after diagnosis.
