Two Lung Cancer Tests May Determine Presence and Type of Disease

20100113_lung_cancer_testsIn the future, perhaps a simple blood test may be used to diagnose lung cancer and a breath test can determine the type. These findings were discussed as scientists shared knowledge at the Joint Conference on Molecular Origins of Lung Cancer in Coronado California on Wednesday.

These two lung cancer tests may be available in the future. The first is a blood test to determine if a patient has lung cancer.

Scientists make breakthrough in small-cell lung cancer

images-26Scientists have discovered a way to predict which patients with small-cell lung cancer may be resistant to first-line chemotherapy.

This breakthrough made by Researchers for TGen Clinical Research Services at Scottsdale Healthcare (TCRS) is critical since patients with small-cell lung cancer (SCLC) often do not get a second chance at therapies to combat this aggressive type of cancer.

TGen-Scottsdale Healthcare researchers make breakthrough in lung cancer

Researchers for TGen Clinical Research Services at Scottsdale Healthcare (TCRS) have identified a way to predict which patients with small-cell lung cancer may be resistant to first-line chemotherapy.

The study, Tumor MicroRNA Biomarkers Associated with De Novo Chemoresistance in Small Cell Lung Cancer, will be presented today in San Diego at a joint conference of the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) and the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer (IASLC).

Alternative Lung Cancer Treatment and You

img_nutrition_landing1Most of the people around the world die due to cancer, and one common cause that ties them together is lung cancer. The standard age for the diagnosis of this disease is sixty. Cancer can be broadly classified into two types, small cell (or coat cell) lung cancer and non-small cell lung cancer. The growth of small cell lung cancer is very quick and can easily spread to the other body parts. This kind of lung cancer is most common among the smokers. The non-small cell lung cancer is further divided into three types; squamous cell carcinoma (a very common type of lung cancer), adenocarcinoma, and large cell carcinoma.

Poniard Cancer Drug Fails Pivotal Study: BioBuzz

images-93Poniard Pharmaceuticals’(PARD Quote) cancer drug picoplatin failed to significantly prolong survival in patients with advanced small cell lung cancer, according to results of a pivotal study disclosed Monday.

The negative results sent Poniard shares plunging 77% to $1.70 in Monday’s pre-market trading session.

Small cell lung cancer patients treated with picoplatin had an 11% reduction in the risk of death compared to patients treated with best supportive care, but this survival benefit was not robust enough to be statistically significant.
