What Is Mesothelioma? Lung Cancer From Asbestos

lungs_xray.jpgMesothelioma is a form of lung cancer that is almost always caused by asbestos exposure and is most commonly found in the outer lining of the lungs called the mesothelium. A majority of the people who develop mesothelioma contract this cancer through breathing in asbestos fibers or being exposed to asbestos dust while on the job. In cases where mesothelioma is found in a person with no previous occupational exposure, it is summized that the exposure may have stemmed from asbestos fibers found on the clothes of someone in their home who worked in an area where asbestos dust was found.

New Treatments Being Developed for Asbestos-Related Cancer

image002_72.jpgMesothelioma is a particularly rare, aggressive, and deadly form of cancer that is typically found in individuals who have experienced an environmental exposure to asbestos. Asbestos is a naturally occurring, fibrous silicate mineral that can be found in several forms, including chrysotile and tremolite asbestos, though, all varieties of the material are currently listed as known carcinogens (cancer-causing agents) by the U.S. government.

Researchers have shown that microscopic, airborne asbestos fibers, once inhaled, become permanently embedded in the lining of the lungs where they can be the single contributing cause of malignant diseases such as mesothelioma, asbestosis (severe scarring of the lungs leading to serious respiratory problems), and lung cancer.

Mesothelioma Treatment Gets Boost with New Diagnostic Test

lung_cancer_awareness_month.jpgIsraeli-based MicroRNA company, Rosetta Genomics, has made a giant leap in cancer diagnosis by announcing the commercial availability of its third diagnostic test, miRview (TM) meso.

This breakthrough marks the first molecularly-based test that can accurately diagnose mesothelioma from other types of cancers found in the lung.

MicroRNAs are recently-discovered RNAs that consist of a chain of nucleotide units, each made of a nitrogenous base, a ribose sugar and a phosphate. Although similar to DNA, RNA is single-stranded, while DNA is double-stranded. MicroRNAs provide the ability to treat and diagnose a variety of human illnesses and conditions.

Mesothelioma.com: Two Lung Cancer-Specific Genes Identified

gene lung.jpgA group of researchers from the World Health Organisation’s International Agency (WHO) for Research on Cancer has identified two genes that reportedly increase an individual’s chances of developing certain forms of lung cancer by as much as 60%, according to a study published in Nature Genetics journal.

According to Paul Brennan, a cancer epidemiologist with WHO, certain types of DNA make a person more or less likely to develop certain types of cancer.

Cancer risk with carbon nanotubes

carbon nanotubes.jpgThe study in mice showed that long carbon nanotubes could cause inflammation of the membrane which surrounds organs (the mesothelium), and this is similar to what is seen with certain types of asbestos. With blue and brown asbestos, inflammation of the mesothelium of the lungs can lead to the development of a rare lung cancer (mesothelioma); however, the mice in this study were not studied for long enough to see if they developed cancer. Carbon nanotubes that are embedded in other materials, like those in tennis rackets, car body panels and bike frames, are thought to be relatively harmless, but the researchers suggest that further studies are needed to confirm this.
