Bonnie J. Addario Lung Cancer Foundation 5K Walk/Run, May 14

Join the drive to eradicate lung cancer at the second annual Bonnie J. Addario Lung Cancer Foundation 5K Walk/Run!
Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in both men and women, yet, partially because of the stigma of cigarette smoking, has far less funding for research than other forms of cancer. Astoundingly, the fastest growing group of lung cancer patients is young women, below the age of 40, who have no known risk factors, including smoking.

‘Superman’ sister-in-law visits city

ALBANY, Ga. — Even though she has a medical degree herself, Dr. Deborah Morosini did not realize the true impact of lung cancer until one of her loved ones perished from it.
Now she is making an attempt to raise awareness on a public level.
Morosini, sister of the late Dana Reeve and a pathologist at AstraZeneca Pharmaceuticals, paid a visit to the Phoebe Cancer Center Thursday afternoon to give an address on how lung cancer impacts women.
Morosini was inspired to educate others on the subject by both her sister and late brother-in-law, actor Christopher Reeve. Dana Reeve, a non-smoker, died from stage-four lung cancer within a year of being widowed.
“In my mind, Dana was not the typical lung cancer patient,” Morosini said. “All she had was a light cough.
“Advocacy groups reached out for my help, and I thought: ‘I’m a doctor — how do I not know that lung cancer is a major cancer killer?’ ”

ASCO Issues Provisional Clinical Opinion Recommending EGFR Mutation Testing Prior To Use Of First-Line Targeted Drugs For Advanced Lung Cancer

The American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) today issued a provisional clinical opinion (PCO) on the clinical use of epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) mutation testing to identify patients with advanced lung cancer who may benefit from targeted agents known as EGFR tyrosine kinase inhibitors. These treatments include gefitinib (Iressa) and erlotinib (Tarceva). The PCO, which is based on the results of five recent randomized clinical trials, recommends that patients with advanced non-small cell lung cancer who are being considered for first-line therapy with an EGFR tyrosine kinase inhibitor (meaning the patient has not previously been treated with chemotherapy or other anti-cancer drugs) should first have their tumor tested for EGFR mutations. Such testing is currently available, both at academic medical centers and at some community medical centers.

Biologists Pinpoint A Genetic Change That Helps Tumors Move To Other Parts Of The Body

MIT cancer biologists have identified a genetic change that makes lung tumors more likely to spread to other parts of the body. The findings, to be published in the April 6 online issue of Nature, offers new insight into how lung cancers metastasize and could help identify drug targets to combat metastatic tumors, which account for 90 percent of cancer deaths.
