IT WAS LIKE GETTING SLAMMED WITH A MACK TRUCK. I NEVER SMOKED, I HAD NO HEALTH PROBLEMS, I DID ALL THE NORMAL SCREENING. SHOCKING WOULD BE AN UNDERSTATEMENT. —ANGIE LEE-OW*August 24th, 2009
During the last decade there has been an explosion of knowledge about what cancer is and how it can be treated. As a result, scientists have developed new drugs known as targeted molecular therapies designed to zero in on the mechanisms that supply blood to tumors and promote their growth and division, which spares healthy tissue, causes fewer side effects, and improves quality of life…Both studies involved patients with non-small cell lung cancer, the most common lung cancers, accounting for about 80 percent of all lung cancers.

(Media-Newswire.com) – Cold Spring Harbor, NY – Swim Across America ( SAA ) has pledged $50,000 to Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory ( CSHL ) to support the work of cancer researcher Rafaella Sordella, Ph.D. SAA raised part of the money during its 2009 “Sound to the Cove Swim” held on Saturday, August 15, during which more than 200 swimmers took the plunge into Long Island Sound to raise money for, and increase awareness of, cancer research.
Dr. Sordella, who is an assistant professor at CSHL, thanked SAA for the generous donation. “Lung cancer causes one in every three cancer deaths in the U.S., but federal funding for lung cancer research is only 5% of the total cancer research budget, which is not at all proportionate to the magnitude of the problem,” said Dr. Sordella.

Two bills making their way through the Legislature have the support of many Californians as a legitimate way to help ease the state’s budget crisis while also discouraging smoking. One would raise the tobacco tax by $1.50 a pack, and the other would increase it by $2.10.
The justification for the tax increase is the negative effect smoking has on public health. I do not object to a tobacco tax. Yet little, if any, of the revenue generated under these bills would actually go toward lung cancer research for early detection and a cure.
