St. Louis University researchers are comparing two standard treatments for lung cancer — one that uses surgery to remove the tumor and another that delivers high, focused doses of radiation with a robot.
The clinical trial will compare the three-year survival rate of patients who have a lobectomy with those who use the radiation treatment with the robotic CyberKnife. Participants must have early-stage non-small cell lung cancer, the most common form of lung cancer.

Sue Burns, part of the heart and soul of the Giants, died early Sunday morning at her home in Atherton. She was 58.
Mrs. Burns was a passionate baseball fan and principal owner of the Giants, a close friend of Barry Bonds through his best and worst of times, and an enthusiastic supporter of the team, regardless of its place in the standings.
Burns died of complications from lung cancer, former managing partner Peter Magowan said.

Abbott Molecular, the fast-growing unit of Abbott Laboratories that makes genomic and other medical tests, said on Monday it entered into an agreement with British drugmaker GlaxoSmithKline to develop a test to screen for lung cancer.
The company said the test will focus on an antigen called MAGE-A3 and will screen for non-small lung cancer tumors.

It includes treatments that can be personally tailored for an individual’s type of cancer. A San Francisco opera singer who was diagnosed with advanced lung cancer at the age of 42 is already seeing the benefits of targeted treatment.
Zheng Cao is a guest singer with the San Francisco Opera. She was diagnosed with advanced stage lung cancer just three months ago.
