small-cell-lcGemin X Pharmaceuticals, a clinical stage biopharmaceutical company developing novel, targeted cancer therapeutics, today presented positive results from a Phase 1b clinical trial of its lead product candidate obatoclax (GX15-070) for the treatment of first line patients with extensive-stage small cell lung cancer (SCLC).

Merck KGaA’s says cancer vaccine safe in study

merck-buildingMerck KGaA’s experimental cancer vaccine Stimuvax proved safe to use in a long-term Phase II study on lung cancer patients, the German drugmaker said on Saturday.

The trial showed that patients’ immune systems did not turn on normal cells, a major concern in new vaccines that are designed to prime the body’s immune system to detect and attack cancer cells.

Phase III Study Data With Vandetanib (Zactima(TM)) in Patients With Advanced Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer (NSCLC) Presented at American Society of Clinical Oncology

non-small-cellData from the Phase III ZODIAC study in advanced non-small cell lung cancer patients, with the investigational drug vandetanib, were presented today at the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) meeting in Orlando. Results show that the study met its primary endpoint, demonstrating that the addition of vandetanib to docetaxel resulted in a statistically significant improvement in progression-free survival (PFS), the length of time a patient lives without their cancer growing.

Using CT scans to screen for lung cancer may carry risks

ct-scanLung cancer screenings may carry hidden dangers, researchers announced Saturday at the American Society of Clinical Oncologymeeting in Orlando.

People who are screened have a 21% chance of being unnecessarily frightened by findings that initially seem suspicious, but turn out to be benign, says lead author Jennifer Croswell.

Hormone pills may make lung cancer more deadly

pills3There’s more troubling news about hormone therapy for menopause symptoms: Lung cancer seems more likely to prove fatal in women who are taking estrogen-progestin pills, a study suggests.

Hormone users who developed lung cancer were more than twice as likely to die from the disease as women who weren’t taking hormones, according to results reported Saturday.

Lung Cancer Alliance Calls American Cancer Society’s Claim of Progress Selective

lca-logo1Lung Cancer Alliance (LCA) said that the American Cancer Society’s claim of “progress in cancer fight” earlier this week was based on “selective culling of statistics and ignores the dismal truth that we have made very little progress on the most lethal cancers, including lung cancer, which causes one in every two cancer deaths, or in metastatic cancer of any kind.”

ALIMTA(R) (pemetrexed for injection) Receives Positive Opinion From CHMP as Maintenance Therapy for Nonsquamous Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer

lilyEli Lilly and Company announced today that the European Medicines Agency’s (EMEA) Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use (CHMP) has issued a positive opinion for the use of ALIMTA(R) (pemetrexed for injection) as monotherapy for the maintenance treatment of locally advanced or metastatic non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) with other than predominantly squamous cell histology in patients whose disease has not progressed immediately following platinum-based chemotherapy.
