Battling Lung Cancer: One Woman’s Journey

pamela-lessardIn the past few years, two people in my family have been diagnosed with cancer—my stepfather, and my stepsister. My stepfather lost his battle with stomach cancer fairly quickly, succumbing to the disease within months of his diagnosis. He was 76, and up until his first symptoms, was incredibly fit, vibrant and constantly on the go.

His daughter, Claire, 50, an avid outdoorswoman and nonsmoker, just this past February was diagnosed with Stage 4 lung cancer . She’s still fighting, and this is her story.

1574R-018939Early detection of disease means better chance of survival. That’s the rationale behind cancer screening programs. Unfortunately, whenever chest radiography has been trialled as a means of seeking out early-stage lung cancer, mortality rates have not reduced.

Simple test may determine smokers’ lung cancer risk

artwomansmokinggiSmoking is a lot like Russian roulette: You never know who will end up developing lung cancer and who won’t. But Dr. Jian-Min Yuan, as well as other researchers from the University of Minnesota, say they are one step closer to determining a smoker’s risk for developing the disease. In a study, they tracked the carcinogen and nicotine levels in nearly 500 smokers through a simple urine test and discovered a link between the level of a specific carcinogen and lung cancer. Their findings were presented at the American Association for Cancer Research conference.

Early-stage lung cancer identified using computer-aided system

cadA computer-aided detection (CAD) method may help radiologists identify cancerous lung nodules at an early stage, according to a study performed at the University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore, MD.

“In our study we identified 88 nodules that were not detected at the time of interpretation but visible in retrospect and were subsequently determined to be lung cancers,” said Joseph Jen-Sho Chen, MD, lead author of the study. “CAD was applied to the overlooked nodules and we found that 45-55% of the missed nodules were found using the CAD software. The implication of our study is that it is possible that at least some of the nodules representing lung cancer might have been diagnosed at an earlier stage, resulting in early treatment and perhaps a better outcome,” said Dr. Chen.
