October 9th, 2008
Kirkby, 60, has metastatic lung cancer. She has been through rounds of radiation and chemotherapy, and, during the summer, had a vertebrae removed after the cancer spread to her spine. She began the school year tired and underweight from an infection. But she began it nonetheless.
