The politics behind the pink ribbon

Dennis pointed out in the journal Science in 2004, breast cancer received nine times the funding per death as lung cancer. “Important health issues such as diarrhea, influenza, and lung cancer may not be sexy, but they deserve the public’s attention and commitment from policymakers and the scientific community,” he wrote.

Olyphant kindergartner’s next project: cure for cancer

A hobby photographer, Timmy was selling his photography of turtles, ducks, flags and other odds and ends to raise money for lung cancer research.

What might surprise most is Timmy is a 6-year-old kindergartner.

Lung cancer deaths 3 times higher around factory that made asbestos products

MesotheliomaResidents living around a factory here that produced asbestos products for decades have a death rate from lung cancer that is about three times higher than the national average, an Osaka health official has announced.Shinji Kumagai, head of the environmental health division at the Osaka Prefectural Institute of Public Health, announced the finding on Sunday concerning residents living around the Hashima factory of Nichias Corp.

Predictors of long time survival after lung cancer surgery. A retrospective cohort study.

lungs.jpgThere have been few reports regarding long time survival after lung cancer surgery. The influence of age and pulmonary function on long time survival is still not fully discovered.

Some reports suggest that hospitals with a high surgical volume have better results. The aim of this study was to evaluate lung cancer surgery performed in a county hospital in terms of 30 days mortality, complications and predictors of long time survival.

US Researchers ID 26 Genes Responsible For Lung Cancer

news_27249.jpgUS researchers have identified 26 genes that are frequently mutated in people who develop adenocarcinoma, the most common form of lung cancer, a discovery that could further lead to individualized therapies to fight the disease.

Fernald Plant Workers Faced Danger from 2nd Source of Radon

radon.jpgWorkers at the Fernald uranium processing plant near Cincinnati were exposed to a second, possibly more dangerous source of radon, a new study has found.  Researchers at the University of Cincinnati have identified six uranium-ore silos in the plant’s production area that they say that exposed 12 percent of the workers there to dangerously high levels of radon.  More than half of the workers at the plant would have been exposed to low levels of radon, the study said.
