granite_countertop.jpgAccording to a report in the Times, a pediatrician that was doing her due diligence and checking everything and she claims that during a routine inspection done on a cottage she was purchasing an inspector found elevated levels of radon, a radioactive gas that can cause lung cancer.

Morning Show Fuels Countertop Cancer Fears

granite.jpgAccordign to Liebert, radon gas is a “carcinogen gas that we inhale [that] causes lung cancer,” and it is emitted from certain types of granite and could be harmful.
 

     Smith showed some skepticism, though, saying, “I’m having a difficult time getting my head around the idea that the countertops in your home might literally be dangerous.”

Students spend their summer time helping raise money to fight cancer

Story.jpgHelping others…that’s how a group of Binghamton middle schoolers are spending their summer. The kids are part of the Summer Service Learning program, which does community service projects and raises money for a charity. This year they’re helping the Michael Connolly Lung Cancer Endowment Fund. Michael, who was a Binghamton graduate, was a non-smoker who died at the age of 39 from lung cancer. To raise money for the fund, the students held an event at West Middle School called “Sidewalk Stories”.
