Genzyme Announces License Agreement with Moffitt Cancer Centre

lc1.jpgGenzyme has announced  that it has entered into a license agreement with Moffitt Cancer Centre to obtain exclusive worldwide diagnostic testing rights to the discovery of the relationship of two proteins to patient response to non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) treatment. The expression level of these proteins may help predict how these patients will respond to therapy.

Peregrine Pharmaceuticals Receives Approval to Conduct a Phase II Trial of Bavituximab in Patients With Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer

chemo.jpgPeregrine Pharmaceuticals, Inc. , a clinical stage biopharmaceutical company developing monoclonal antibodies for the treatment of cancer and hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection, today announced that its Phase II clinical protocol to study bavituximab in combination with chemotherapy in patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) has been approved by the Drug Controller General of India (DCGI). The primary objective of the multi-center clinical trial is to assess the overall tumor response rate in NSCLC patients treated with the combination of bavituximab and carboplatin plus paclitaxel.

New Machine Targets Cancer

hybrid diagnostic scanner.jpgX-ray technician Rae Anne Robertson says, “If you catch it in a later stage then it’s a lot harder to treat and the prognosis isn’t as good, so we want to catch things as early as possible.”

That is something this new machine is very good at. It’s a hybrid diagnostic scanner. It fuses CT scan and PET scan technology to create a complete picture of Alvin’s lung cancer. The CT scan tells where the tumor is, and the PET scan shows what it looks like.

New Mexico Veterans Call for early lung cancer screening using Biomoda technology

lc3.jpgBiomoda, an Albuquerque biomedical company that has developed a non-invasive test for early detection of lung cancer, declared on 21 January that busloads of New Mexico veterans will meet state legislators on 29 January as part of “Veterans Day” in Santa Fe to push for USD1.3m in funding of an early lung cancer screening programme for veterans.

A big voice against lung cancer

b1.jpg Lung cancer didn’t stop Bonnie Addario, 60, from giving a big voice to those suffering from the same cancer as her.
The San Carlos resident began a nonprofit organization that gave more than $2.5 million in the last two years to research and provide awareness on the cancer that kills more people than any other cancer.
“There are too many people dying every day,” she said. “Four-hundred-and-fifty-five people die every day from lung cancer … That’s like an airplane crashing every day,” she said.
