Tumors put to the test
The mutant, cancer-specific protein EGFRvIII has been found in several other tumor types besides glioblastoma — but only rarely. In the case of lung cancer, for example, the mutant protein may be present in as few as 5% of tumors. For the EGFRvIII vaccine approach to be practical, physicians will need a way to efficiently discriminate between tumors that are positive for EGFRvIII and those that aren’t.
