Stage 1 non-small cell lung cancer benefits from early aggressive treatment

UCSF.jpgGiven that long-term survival of untreated stage 1 non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is virtually nil, and that five-year survival of surgically resected stage I NSCLC is as high as 80 per cent, early surgical resection and ablative therapy is indicated, according to investigators at the University of California at San Francisco.

Tammy Faye Messner dies of cancer

tammy.jpgTammy Faye Messner, who as Tammy Faye Bakker helped her husband, Jim, build a multimillion-dollar evangelism empire and then watched it collapse in disgrace, has died. She was 65.Messner had battled colon cancer since 1996 that more recently spread to her lungs. She died peacefully Friday at her home near Kansas City, Mo., said Joe Spotts, her manager and booking agent.

‘Sculpted’ radiation for early lung cancer

So called “conformal” radiation therapy uses information from CT and MRI scans to “sculpt” a radiation beam to the exact dimensions of a tumor.
