Cancer patients and their families know probably better than anyone about the importance of soldiering on. We do it quietly every day, not by running for the nation’s highest office, but by raising kids, going to work, walking the dog, or even putting away the clean laundry that’s been sitting folded in the basket for weeks.
So John Edwards’ announcement to continue with his Democratic political ambitions isn’t that surprising, despite the news that his wife’s breast cancer has spread to her bones and possibly her lungs — pushing the family back into that netherworld of cancer uncertainty. “We’re not going to cower in a corner,” John Edwards said staunchly.

“The regimen of screening determines how early the cancer is diagnosed. This is critical, as it provides the opportunity for earlier treatment which can be curative,” said NY-ELCAP principal investigator Claudia I. Henschke, Ph.D., M.D., professor of radiology at Weill Cornell Medical College and chief of the divisions of chest imaging and health care policy and technology assessment at New York-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center in New York City. “Following the appropriate regimen also markedly decreases unnecessary work-up and biopsies,” she added.

In RF ablation, doctors insert a special needle that transmits high-frequency electrical currents into a tumor.

Computed tomography screening done annually identifies a high proportion of patients with early-stage lung cancer, a New York study found.The latest findings of the New York Early Lung Cancer Action Project published in the April issue of the journal Radiology found CT results prompted recommendations for further work-up on 14 percent of the 6,295 baseline screening participants. Also, 6 percent of the 6,014 repeat screening participants were referred for further investigation.
