Ford cancers: MP backs call for new probe

Eastleigh’s Liberal Democrat MP today pledged his support for a second inquiry at the Swaythling plant focusing on all forms of cancer.

Asbestos cancer toll will not peak until 2015

meso.jpgAlmost 200,000 people in the UK could still get asbestos-related cancers, say scientists funded by Cancer Research UK.

Exposure to asbestos causes a form of cancer called mesothelioma – which affects the lining of the lungs – as well as lung cancer. The symptoms can take many decades to emerge.

Lung Cancer Incidence Rates High Among Women Who Have Never Smoked

NCI.jpgWhile smoking remains the predominant cause of lung cancer, a new study reveals that incidence rates of lung cancer among people who have never smoked (never smokers) are higher in women than in men. The study results were published in the February 10 Journal of Clinical Oncology. This study is unlike previous studies that focused mainly on mortality rates and that found men had higher lung cancer mortality rates than women.

Asbestos-related lung cancers ‘will kill nearly 200,000′

asbestos.gifNearly 200,000 people will die from lung cancer because of exposure to asbestos, scientists warned today.

Those particularly at risk are people born in the 1940s who worked in the construction industry.

Carpenters, laggers, shipyard workers, metal workers and electricians now in their 60s are all in the highest-risk category.
