CT scans could detect lung cancer earlier

tibbiscan.jpgLung cancer, according to the American Cancer Society, is the leading cause of cancer death in the country.  Nearly 175,00 Americans will be affected by lung cancer and the vast majority will eventually lose their battle with the disease largely because it is discovered too late for any type of treatment to be effective. But, Dr. Christopher Leary of Radiologic Associates in Bristol, said that if lung cancer is caught in its early stages, a patient’s chances of survival are drastically improved. Leary added that spiral computed tomography CT scans are able to provide early detection.

Pharmacyclics files for OK of cancer drug

pharmacyclics.jpgPharmacyclics said Friday it submitted a new drug application with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for Xcytrin.The company is seeking an indication for treatment of patients with non-small cell lung cancer that has metastasized to the brain.

Bishop Doran recovering from lung cancer surgery

Bishop Doran.jpgThe Catholic Diocese of Rockford, IL announces that Bishop Thomas G. Doran is recovering from surgery at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn. Approximately one-fourth of his left lung was removed during a four-hour surgery Thursday, Dec. 14. Two spots, one in each lung, were discovered during his annual routine physical earlier this month.

Cancer - The New Frontier: Alive two years on, thanks to new drug

The drug was DMXAA, developed at the Auckland Cancer Society Research Centre by Professors Bruce Baguley and Bill Denny.

Non-small cell lung cancer - Current drug regimens for NSCLC

lungs1.jpgSurgery remains confined to localized NSCLC patients and the majority of patients are diagnosed in advanced stages of the disease, where platinum analogue-based pharmacotherapy is the mainstay of treatment. The introduction of third-generation cytotoxics has raised the hope of significantly improving efficacy, but prognosis is still poor, and the survival rate has remained relatively stagnant.
