Eli Lilly and Company has launched a major clinical trial evaluating ALIMTA (pemetrexed for injection) in extensive-stage small cell lung cancer (SCLC), a devastating and rapidly spreading form of lung cancer. This international trial, expected to be the largest ever to be conducted in SCLC(1), will assess the potential clinical benefit of pemetrexed in combination with carboplatin, a commonly-used chemotherapeutic agent, in direct comparison to the current leading treatment option of etoposide in combination with carboplatin.

Macmillan Cancer Support and The Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation are urging people not to delay in visiting their GP to get checked out if they are concerned or have any symptoms of lung cancer because it could, quite literally, mean the difference between life and death.

Pharmaceutical Solutions released the results of an analysis of the behavior and intentions of people who seek cancer-related information online. According to the study, people who research cancer online turn to the Internet predominantly for information on treatment options, which they subsequently validate through discussions with physicians, family or friends. Additionally, more than two-thirds of online cancer researchers (67 percent) report visiting a Web site providing information on a specific cancer-related drug.

The almost 400 guests who attended the Sequoia Hospital Foundation’s gala ball on Oct. 14 showed their heart while supporting the programs of Sequoia Hospital. The “Building with Our Hearts” theme was carried throughout the elegant event held at the Sharon Heights Golf and Country Club in Menlo Park. Big winners were Bonnie and Tony Addario, avid supporters and donors to the foundation.

American singer Freddy Fender, best known for his 1975 smash hit Before the Next Teardrop Falls, died Saturday in his home in Texas. Fender had been in failing health, diagnosed with lung cancer earlier this year.

Exposure to too much radon is the leading cause of lung cancer among nonsmokers and the second leading cause of lung cancer overall, causing some 21,000 lung cancer deaths annually in the U.S.
