OSI Pharmaceutical Starts New Tarceva Lung Cancer Trial

TarcevaOSI Pharmaceuticals Inc. (OSIP) said it will start a Phase III study of its Tarceva drug as a targeted adjuvant treatment for certain non-small-cell lung-cancer patients who have undergone surgery.

Benefits of Compound in Blackberries Studied

Combination of Approaches Improves Detection of Lung Cancer in Bronchoscopy Specimens

fluorbronch.jpgResearchers from the Mayo Clinic have reported that fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) is more accurate than cytology in detecting lung cancer in bronchoscopy specimens. Furthermore, the combination of tests is even more accurate. These results were published in the journal Chest.

Gene variant may raise lung cancer risk from radon

radon.jpgGene variants that lead to decreased amounts of an enzyme known as GSTM1 may raise the risk of lung cancer related to radon exposure, new research suggests. The gene variants also seem to increase the cancer-causing effect of secondhand smoke.

Group Calls for SEC Investigation of Tobacco Companies for Defrauding Investors

Lungcancersucks.jpgLung Cancer Alliance (LCA) today requested the Securities Exchange Commission (SEC) to investigate whether tobacco companies defrauded investors.In a letter written today to SEC commissioners, Laurie Fenton, LCA president, asked for a full investigation of possible securities laws violations for failing to disclose fraudulent marketing tactics.
